Mammograms are an important part of safeguarding your health, especially if you're over 40 or have significant risk factors for breast cancer. The Affordable Care Act requires that health plans fully cover the cost of a screening mammogram every one or two years for women over Medicare and Medicaid cover them as well. However, if you aren't insured or don't meet the criteria for coverage, that doesn't mean you have to go without. A number of options are available for free or low-cost mammograms.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for women in the United States and in Georgia. Early detection is critical; cancers found earlier are more likely to be treated successfully, and women are surviving longer with breast cancer. To help reduce the impact of breast and cervical cancer in Georgia, the Georgia Department of Public Health provides breast and cervical cancer screening, diagnostic services and referral to treatment as medically indicated to uninsured women residing in Georgia. Please contact your local health department for more information.
