The story focuses on a married, middle-class couple who resort to robbery when the husband's employer goes bankrupt. In the year , Dick Harper Jim Carrey , an executive for a major media corporation called Globodyne, gets promoted to Vice President of Communications. However, while doing an interview on television on his first day, he learns that his CEO covertly sold 80 percent of his shares in the company through shell companies, and Globodyne is accused of "perverting the American dream" by presidential candidate Ralph Nader himself. As this happens, all of the company's stocks drop to zero, and everyone, including Dick, loses their jobs, savings, and pensions. Dick breaks the news to his family that night over dinner, but tries to assure them that he can find another job as vice president. However, over the next few months, he finds that Globodyne's collapse has sent the overall economy into a recession, and thus left it next to impossible to find a new vice president position as there are a large influx of other candidates.

Fun With Dick and Jane
Directed by Ted Kotcheff , the film is caustically critical of the "anarchy" of the American way of life. The character names come from the Dick and Jane series of children's educational books, and the title is taken from the title of one of the books in the series. Dick Harper is a successful aerospace engineer in Los Angeles , where he and wife Jane have a lovely house, with a swimming pool and new lawn under way. Jane takes care of their son, Billy. Due to financial reversals at the business, however, Dick's boss, Charlie Blanchard, suddenly fires him.
Once you get past the novelty of Fun With Dick and Jane 's amusing premise - two upwardly mobile yuppies turn criminal in order to support their lavish lifestyle - there's very little here to keep the viewer engaged, a problem that's exacerbated by the unusually heavy-handed screenplay. In its verve to lampoon the distorted values of the middle class, the film throws out anything resembling plot or character development - with the end result a mildly engaging but mostly tedious exercise in monotony. When Dick Harper George Segal loses his high-paying position within the aerospace industry, he - along with his wife, Jane Jane Fonda , and son Sean Frye - attempts to adjust to a life on welfare and food stamps. But it soon becomes obvious that both Dick and Jane are not built for this sort of existence, and it's not long before the two are forced to engage in larcenous activities to maintain their opulent existence.
